Westlaw and Lexis-Nexis Face Challenge
From Free Online Legal Research Sites

March 18, 2008 -- While Westlaw and Lexis-Nexis continue to add features and raise rates, a quiet revolution has been occurring in legal research.

A number of new sites have been expanding their offerings, while providing legal research for free.

Among the most popular of the free legal research sites are AltLaw, ChessLaw, PreCYdent, and The Public Library of Law.

All of the free sites offer pubic domain items, such as Supreme Court opinions, federal Court of Appeals opinions, federal District Court cases, state cases, and federal and state statutes, at no charge.

They may lack some of the bells and whistles of Westlaw and Lexis-Nexis, but they have all the fundamentals.  And they're free.
