The Bar Review Case Timeline

To the Editor:

Re "Young Lawyers Sue, and Little Changes" (Feb. 25), which described the tentative settlement of a class-action lawsuit in which BAR/BRI, the bar review company, was accused of illegal, unethical and anticompetitive acts:

In the article, John Shaughnessy, a spokesman for BAR/BRI's parent company, the Thomson Corporation, said, "We are pleased to bring a close to this matter as the alleged actions that formed the basis of the suit occurred years prior to Thomson acquiring the business."

I take issue with the second part of the Thomson statement.

Thomson bought BAR/BRI in 2001. While some acts are alleged to have occurred between 1997 and 2001, many are alleged to have taken place since then. For instance, the complaint says that lawyers and law students were overcharged from 1997 to at least 2006.
