Kaplan Acquires The Study Group, a Leading Provider
Of Self-Study Full-Service Bar Review

With Acquisition, Kaplan Now Offers Full-Service Bar Review Courses in 30 States

NEW YORK--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Kaplan, Inc. announced today that it has acquired The Study Group, a nationwide provider of self-study bar review with home study course offerings for full-service bar review in 30 U.S. states.

Currently, through its Kaplan PMBR unit, Kaplan provides preparation for the Multistate Bar Exam (MBE), as well as full-service preparation programs for students preparing for the state bar exams in New York, New Jersey and Florida. Combined, Kaplan PMBR and The Study Group will offer full-service bar review course offerings in 30 states and Multistate preparation across the country.

The Study Group offers full-service home study programs for the following 30 states: Alabama, Arkansas, California, Florida, Georgia, Hawaii, Idaho, Illinois, Kentucky, Maryland, Minnesota, Mississippi, Missouri, Montana, Nebraska, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New Mexico, New York, North Carolina, North Dakota, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, South Dakota, Texas, Utah, Virginia, West Virginia, Wisconsin, plus the District of Columbia, Guam and the Northern Mariana Islands. Eighteen of these states use the Multistate Essay Exam for the essay portion of the bar exam. The Study Group also offers its bar exam Essay Trainer course designed to maximize bar exam essay scores for any jurisdiction.

The Study Group, which offers its programs in the form of lectures on audio CDs or preloaded on iPods, books and ancillary study materials, will continue to operate under its current name.

Kaplan PMBR earlier this year launched full-service bar review courses with unique and industry-pioneering program features such as on-demand online course lecture videos, personalized study plans that pinpoint students specific areas of weakness and provide resources for targeted improvement, unlimited essay grading, an Ask the Attorney hotline, an MBE Qbank online quiz builder, and a money-back guarantee.

In 2007, more than 81,000 people took the bar exam. Nationally, 67 percent of exam takers (54,800) passed, although pass rates vary by state.

The Study Group represents the latest addition to Kaplans growing portfolio of legal education programs, which also includes three law schools (the wholly-online Concord Law School, Nottingham Law at Kaplan Law School and Holborn College in the U.K.) as well as criminal justice and legal training through its higher education division. Kaplans test prep division prepares tens of thousands of aspiring law students for the Law School Admission Test (LSAT) annually.
